BIZ OWNERS: Stop a minute and remember…

                                                              From the classic song, “HELLO YOUNG LOVERS”

                                                                                     

     Sure you can stop to smell the flowers, but that just gives you a breather. What you really need to do is stop for a minute and remember how it feels to have wings on your heels and to fly down the street in a trance because THAT will give you M O T I V A T I O N.

     Think back to the last (or first) time you were so excited, you might as well have been flying. Go on. Do it! Think back. Remember what was going on? Remember how great you felt? Remember how you knew at that moment that you could conquer the world?

     Stay with it.

     Now, do it again. Whaaaaat? Yes, do it again! Feelings and behaviors are a choice! Sometimes choices are conscious and sometimes they are unconscious. Make a conscious choice to recreate the exhuberance you felt at that magically high moment and bring it all back into focus. Get your butt cranked up to fly through this coming week!

     Go to bed tonight convinced that you own the world (regardless of reality and woes and worries)! Be in 100% charge of your SELF and your feelings. Go to bed telling yourself:

I will awake at ___AM (insert whatever time you rise) feeling happy, healthy, rested, alert, physically fit, and ready to take in all the money that comes easily and frequently.

     Don’t question me. Don’t dismiss this. Don’t X off the page. Don’t give up on yourself! YOU OWE YOURSELF a huge, successful week. Make the choice and do it! Stop making excuses. Stop allowing (choosing for) your mind to drift back to negative, bah-humbug nonproductive ways of thinking!

     You know in your heart that you can do better, and that you need only to drive your energy with a positive thrust of attitude. TURN OFF THE 11 O’CLOCK NEWS and go to bed reciting the blue boldfaced sentence above. Go on! I dare you! Take up my dare and watch what happens! What have you got to lose? The 11 O’clock News? (It’ll be there tomorrow. Same old stuff. You won’t have missed a thing. I promise.) You might even get up on time!

SMALL BUSINESS STIMULUS BUDGETING

“It Don’t Matter To Me!”

                                                                              

     That song title should be your answer (aside from the ungrammatical “don’t”) to any question about who’s to blame for this economy. All that matters in the end is what you are doing about it for your own business or professional practice.

     Whether you’re a doctor, a retailer, a small-size manufacturer, a distributor, agent, or service provider, it’s time to take a hard look at how you are dealing with your current spending plans. This, for example, is NOT the time to fold up the sales and customer service training rug and store it in the basement. Besides the fact that basement-stored rugs attract mold and mildew, there are better solutions.

     Check in with your local community college or adult education program for an inexpensive training option. Or, do it yourself! Or round-up a team of masters or doctoral students from a nearby university to put a program together for you.

     Many internship programs across the country award academic credits for firsthand real-life experiences. A combination of business and education or psychology majors should be able to package a good motivational training program for your business. Some training is better than no training!

     Just be sure you present such a program in the right light and discourage over-the-top expectations. Help your people to see such an occasion as an opportunity to foster idea exchanges and teamwork, instead of setting up training quality judgements. Point out that what they will get from any program is what they end up putting into it.

     Speaking of motivation, remember that small frequent rewards (like family entertainment arrangements and lunch invitations) are more meaningful in the overall scheme of things than high-priced permanent rewards (like salary/benefit increases).

     Look at ways to promote your business without having to bite the media advertising bullet that will undoubtedly break a tooth if not your wallet. www.BizBrag.com is a terrific free site to register with and post free news releases and newsy photos — every day if you like!

     People are selling everything under the sun on Twitter these days. Also for free. You need tenacious endurance to make Twitter work for you, but it will if you will. Didn’t tenacious endurance get you to where you are anyway? 

     Are you asking people in your family to help you with certain tasks that will help free up your time so you can be more focused on sales, for example? Maybe retired Uncle Harvey wouldn’t mind at all coming in a few times a week to do some light cleaning (in exchange for some sports tickets or a couple of dinners out) to help offset custodial service fees?

     Cover the tax-deductible cost of some business books for your college student son, daughter, neice, nephew, or cousin in exchange for some office, fieldwork or factory floor interns? Combine expenses with neighboring businesses? Shared transportation and shipping costs, even direct mail postage, advertising, clerical and website maintenance sharing are possible.

     Think it out. Tough it out. But stay focused in the process, and stimulate your OWN budget!

OK, you’ve got a website. Now what?

You Expected Maybe Sales?

                                                                                         

You’ve put in the time, effort and money and got yourself a website for your business. YEA! But nothing’s happening with your website. BOO! You advertise your website. YEA! But you’re still not getting any sales action. BOO! You hire a SEO (Search Engine Optimization) person. YEA! Nothing. BOO! Then maybe you even hire another SEO person because you figure the first one was just a doo-dah. YEA!

     Then reality sets in. The vast majority (my personal opinion based on experiences with dozens of clients) of SEO and “analytics” deals are smoke and mirror acts! And the bottom line is that either A) YOU will learn and do what you have to learn and do yourself to make your website work the way you want it to, or B) you must ferret out a reliable person who can do it for you without wasting time, money, and energy on overkill analyzing that does not produce sales.

     At least you now know that –unless you’re looking for a shrink for your dysfunctional website and are willing to pay shrink rates for perpetuity session or engagement arrangements– you can eliminate SEO and “Analytics” people from consideration.

     What’s wrong with SEO and Analytics “experts”? They will never be able to help you create the kinds of support programs you need to boost your site exposure and activate the content enough to rally site visit increases and sales.

     They suck you into believing that only they can analyze and interpret what you yourself can analyze and interpret if you apply yourself…assuming you see some intrinsic value in that to start with. 

     And when all’s said and done, analysis and interpretation will not make website sales. Sure you can play the “keyword” and “key phrase” and “sitemap”games and maybe punch your way up the search engine rankings ladder a rung or two for a week or two, but odds are you’ll end up spending an insane amount of money to achieve even this minimal short-lived progress.

     Better, far better, is to find yourself an expert at writing and re-writing site content, and pay for those services. Your time is better spent doing what you need to do to run your business. Plus, writing effectively and persuasively for the Internet and marketing support materials takes special skills. 

     You need someone who understands your business, who listens carefully to what you want to express about your business, who understands marketing and has a proven track-record in marketing, who knows how to make the most out of your message, and who can write and edit and re-write your homepage and landing pages, who can create promotional support materials, and add or enhance a blog for you.

     A blog? Why do you need a blog? It allows you to “converse” with your customers and prospects in a timely, relaxed manner that promotes ongoing dialogue and customer feedback. It gives your site a personality and makes your site more professional. It’s free!

     Blog activity (even once or twice a week) stimulates site activity. Search engine spiders reward site activity with bump-ups in their rankings. You get more visitors…and, assuming your site mechanics are set up to maximize conversion of visits to sales (which you can accomplish without high-priced “experts”), increased site visits produce increased sales!

HOW DO YOU SURROUND YOURSELF?

Are you on target?

                                                                        

     Everyone likes to help others when they can. Some of us, however, dwell on being do-gooders to the detriment of our own interests. And when we do that, we are not helping others. We can only genuinely help others when we’re coming from a position of strength.

     Some among us like to surround ourselves with people who are less successful (to feel more important), or people who have bigger problems than we do (to minimize the perceptions of our own problems), or people who are just plain lazy or negative (because of a lack of self-esteem or self-confidence…or perhaps backbone)…and if any of these scenerios describe you, and you run a business, you’re in BIG trouble. 

     Draw a three-ring target on a piece of paper. Put the names of the most important person or people in your world in the center circle of the target. In the next-to-the-center-circle ring, put the names of those you spend the most time with in your personal life. Circle those who are most influential.

     In the next ring, put the names of the people you spend the most time with at work. Circle those who are most influential. On the outside ring or edge of the target, write the names of those you would like to spend more time with in your personal life and in your work life. Circle those who are most influential.

     What’s going on here? What do you notice? Are you spending the limited time you have here on Earth with people who are not helping you to get to where you want to go in life? Are you wasting too much time with too many negative people who are influencing your thinking in negative ways?

     Why? What is it exactly that makes you gravitate toward these people? What keeps you from moving on? How hard are you making it on yourself to part ways with those with whom you surround yourself who are bringing you down physically, or mentally or emotionally?

     What keeps your brain from accepting the fact that the negative relationships in your life are preventing you from getting to where you want to go and are –lo and behold– your choice!? What will it take for you to choose a more productive, more positive circle of friends and contacts to surround yourself with?

     Remember, you need not be rude or caustic or uncaring in the process of separating your forward-moving interests from backward-moving friends and associates. You need simply to recognize that it’s time to grow in the ways you have planned to. It’s your choice.

     When you choose to move on with your life, and extract yourself from the clutches of all that have been holding you back, you make yourself and your business stronger, and you strengthen your ability to reach back and help those negative thinkers and doers who matter.

CONGRATULATIONS i.g.Burton & Company!

HOORAY for the good guys!

                                                                      

     It’s not every day that a consultant like me can nominate a client (like i.g. Burton & Company) for an annual Better Business Bureau award as most outstanding family business in the state…and see them win!

     Even after my project engagement with the company ended, I had the good fortune to see this business be honored (tonight at the DuPont Hotel in downtown Wilmington, Delaware) at a formal reception dinner hosted by the Delaware BBB and Governor Jack Markell.

     Now if you’ve read this far, you may be wondering who is i.g. Burton & Company anyway? And there’s little doubt that if you don’t know, you will most definitely be surprised to learn that we’re talking about –of all things– a car dealership!

     i.g.Burton & Company is 101 years old. The company maintains five locations in Milford and Seaford, Delaware. They are one of the nation’s leading dealerships for Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep,  Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and are the world’s oldest Blue-Bird Bus dealership as well.

     They didn’t stand in line behind the automakers they represent, looking for bailout money. They didn’t pull in their rugs and move out of town when Chevrolet and Chrysler hit the rocks.

     In fact, they actually INCREASED their charitable contributions to needy organizations. They INCREASED their customer service training programs. And they went ahead and completed a 6 year-old monster construction project that helped keep hundreds of employees on payroll.

     Of course they have strong financial backing. But why? How did their backing become so commited? BECAUSE i.g. Burton demonstrated commitment to their customers, their employees and their community.

     They didn’t get to be 101 and win an Outstanding Family Business award in a faltering economy by being the stereotypical car dealers. They are fifth generation owned and operated. A great many of their employees have worked there for 15, 20, 25, 30, and more years! (This, in a day when most car dealers seem to keep employees just for those numbers of DAYS!)

     What’s the secret? i.g. Burton & Company has built a long-standing reputation for overkill customer service and for contributing to and supporting wholeheartedly the Delmarva Peninsula communities they serve. The have earned the BBB award, and statewide respect as business leaders.

     They will earn your respect too anytime you’re driving through Delmarva Peninsula (The 2nd biggest peninsula in the U.S., thank you, if you’re not counting Florida). Stop in. Say Hi. Congratulate them on their award. They’ll make you feel proud of it just for having visited. Well done, Burton Family. And well done, Burton Family of Employees!

IN DEFENSE OF HATING “HOPE”

Sorry, political types,

                                                        

“hope” STILL is not the answer!

                                                                                                                         

     I’ve had some flack lately about my “Hope is not the answer” messages. It seems a certain leftcoast-leaning political influence has gotten it’s ignorant, indignant, screaming self in an uproar over my having committed blasphamy because “HOPE” (combined with “CHANGE”) apparently continues to entrench itself as the rally cry of our profoundly inexperienced and badly misdirected federal government.

     I find this odd since never–in the history of the world–has HOPE created CHANGE.

     Hope SOUNDS good if you’re a politician (it just won a campaign!) or if you’re an out-of-touch religious leader (or a professional athlete; I hear lots of them respond to interview questions with “Hopefully…”). But as truth will have it, this line of thinking, dear business owners, operators, managers, and entrepreneurs, is a crock!

     It is unrealistic to the core. Nothing creates change except action!

     Nothing that’s “hoped for” happens without action. A “hope” is a wish. “When you wish upon a star…” is great stuff for kids, but it isn’t going to pull America out of the economic tailspin. Hope and wishing are NOT believing.

     Believing instills action. And only ACTION by small businesses can straighten our crooked path. Small businesses, entrepreneurial ventures and entrepreneurial spirit with ACTION platforms and agendas these leaders, these catalysts of change, can believe in, are what hold the key to financial recovery and growth.

     If we can get government to stop mollycoddling equally-incompetent corporate giants and start providing real, tangible job creation incentives to small business, we will actually have a chance to survive and thrive. Are you truly a leader or truly a follower?

     Will you pick up your phone and leave a message for your government representative that you favor REAL small business job creation incentives over corporate bailouts? Or will you just mosey along to another website, another blog, another email? Hmmm?

Do You Dunk Your Cookies?

                                                                         

You think you’re an entrepreneur, but you’re not sure? Nobody to ask who you think would know? (Or who you wouldn’t want to know that you don’t know?) Okay, here’s what I can tell you . . .

[Before you listen, you might want to know that I graduated from The New School for Entrepreneurs, have taught entrepreneurship at two universities and a community college, have served two federal SBA Advisory Council appointments, created “Corprate Entrepreneurship” and “Doctorpreneurs” training programs and have helped start over 500 successful businesses]

  • 1. Odds are you hated school and never did well with formal coursework, that you had a lemonade stand or sold your used toys or comic books (or junk from the garage) when you were a kid. Some influential adult(s) or your parent(s) or uncle(s)/aunt(s)/sister(s)/brother(s) or someone in your family or the house next to you while you were growing up ran their own business.
  • 2. You are very resourceful and will use a dime to turn a screw when there’s no screwdriver handy. You will dream up new ways to eat that may amaze and/or disgust others– from dunking cookies in your coffee to dipping pretzels instead of chips or wolfing down wasabi sandwiches. You believe in quick-fix and makeshift solutions instead of waiting for proper or prescribed ones.
  • 3. You are not afraid to take reasonable risks. You weigh your options, but don’t hesitate to make decisions and always give a quick thought to “what’s the worst thing could happen?” before proceeding.
  • 4. There is no such thing as a half-empty glass, a failing economy, or a problem with no solution. You believe that you can do whatever is needed anytime and that people and circumstances will make way for you and work in your favor.
  • 5. You are achievement-motivated and have no concept of or regard for time or eating or sleeping or using the bathroom once you get focused and get engaged with any challenge. You welcome challenge, and you’re not afraid of hard work, or of missing some social function at the expense of the task you’re involved with.
  • 6. You know an opportunity when you see one and will jump to take advantage of it even if it means ignoring other pre-planned events and commitments. 
  • 7. You appreciate loyalty in staff and associates, and you welcome their disagreement. You recognize that you don’t know it all, and actively seek out ideas and input from others who you know are more experienced than you.
  • 8. You let no competitor stand in your way, but also will not hesitate to offer cooperative alliance arrangements whenever depletion of resources can be avoided and whever it appears to be that mutual benefits can be obtained by working together.

Now you’ve got it, or you don’t. If you do, run with it! If you don’t, don’t give up! Entrepreneurs are born, it appears to be true, but they are also made . . . and that’s for certain!

YOUR OWN PERSONAL STIMULUS PLAN…

Give Your SELF A Chance!

                                                                                  

     Well, unless you’re a major bank or automaker, you’re probably not going to see much of any meaningful stimulus plan benefits coming your way anytime soon. So, here’s how to make your own: “Your Own Personal Stimulus Plan” requires three things.

     All three are FREE (How about that? Not a bad start, huh?).

     Okay, the first of these, which you will need in order to make the most of the other two, is best summed up by staying on this same site, different page, and clicking here: http://halalpiar.com/?page_id=35 (sorry I haven’t yet mastered the little techie trick of consolidating this link into one word).

     Anyway, you need only to spend 60 seconds on this link page to get it. And–on top of everything else–I guarantee that if you treat the exercise seriously and do it faithfully just 1-3 times a day (for a minute each, even while doing something else!)–in just one week!–you will feel and be happier, healthier, more productive, and have a stronger sense of self-control. You will be more personally stimulated and better equipped to rally your own economy! 

What have you got to lose besides stress and upset feelings? I know. Right! And FREE! What more could you ask for? How can I be so sure? Because it’s worked for 20,000 out of 20,000 people I’ve taught it to who have treated it seriously and who have done it faithfully.

     Let go of doubt, skepticism, dubiousness (now there’s a word!) and just allow yourself to be receptive for 60 seconds. 6 0  S E C O N D S !!! Your age and level of health have no bearing on effectiveness here. Give your SELF a chance to be and feel better every day.

     Okay, now comes the second and third things (you thought I forgot?). These may be even easier now that you’ve mastered the first. Here’s the “Personal Stimulus Plan” deal:

     Go find yourself some person who is younger than 7 years-old and spend an hour with her or him…listening, singing, dancing, playing, whatever floats this youngster’s boat. Get down on the floor (or at least eye level) and enjoy the company. Be sure to listen 80% of the time! Learn something from this child, and learn something about youself in the process.     

     Next (and this need not be the same day, but as soon as possible afterward): Go find yourself some person who is older than 80 years-old and spend an hour with him or her…listening, singing, dancing, playing, whatever floats this oldster’s boat. Ask questions. Listen. Get into her or his “head space” and enjoy what you experience as you learn something new and as you learn something new about you.

Take the new stimulated you to work and watch what happens. It’s not, btw, a bad idea to give this little plan legs every quarter, every month, even every week.

PEEKING THRU CORPORATE KEYHOLES…and other tips for entrepreneurs

“We’d punch in, then get lost!”

                                                                                            

     I not so long ago interviewed two young men who were employed by a major hospital as administrative assistants, assigned to departments that were noted for transcience and frequent physical relocations. Both had been collecting paychecks and full benefits for more than a year. Neither ever did any work, and no one (including their assigned supervisors) knew who they were.

     They would punch in on the timeclock every day and then “get lost,” as they put it, in the corporate healthcare mechanism. They admitted to frequenting the hospital lunchroom; the neighborhood coffeeshop; and the hospital grounds, parking lot, and roof! Sometimes, they even went fishing!

     At day’s end, they would punch out and go home. My report to hospital executives was met not by astonishment as you might expect, but by ambivalance. “Oh, well. that’s to be expected in an organization this big and diverse,” said one of the financial VP’s.

     Well, you can certainly read all kinds of things into that little scenerio, but my first thought–once I got past the shock–was one of gratefulness at not having a business that was so chaotic and out of touch with reality.

     But then as I began peeking through other corporate keyholes, so to speak, I discovered an avalanche of disrespect and undermining “take-whatever-I-can-get” attitudes, from Fortune 500 boardrooms, to monster sales organizations.

     Oh, I’ve often thought, if only every entrepreneur could have seen and experienced the outright theft of time (and supplies) that happens every day in nearly every large company. If only entrepreneuriual types could have a realistic perspective of:

A) What they’re up against in competing with “the big boys,” they’d be a lot less intimidated and far less concerned with the idea of losing customers and prospects to such bumbling, self-absorbed organizations, and 

B) What they might expect to have to deal with as their businesses grow, so they could act now to prevent the kinds of lethargic and outright law-breaking attitudes that many large businesses breed.

     There are many things we as small business owners/operators and managers can learn by watching our big business brothers and sisters. One of these is to focus on companies known for productive motivation.

     You can expect to see heavy emphasis on management making small frequent rewards for good behavior–and even failures when they are achieved through earnest, good faith efforts. Such recognition policies keep good people, and keep good people on task!

     Keeping the best employees takes time, attention and effort. It takes the ability to maintain a sense of balance and good humor in each encounter each day with each employee.

     It takes an awareness–like it or not–that others see management (especially owners) as parents. They watch every move, listen to every word, and strive to please with words and deeds. What a great opportunity that just knowing this, presents as a pathway to enhance your (and their) prospects for business success.

CUSTOMIZED BIZ SERVICES = BIG RETURNS

    You make a living by providing products and services to customers or to other businesses. You see this period of time as appropriate to cut back on expenses and so, wherever possible, you opt for standard cookie-cutter representations in your promotional efforts because they’re less expensive. BIG mistake!

     FIRST of all, you will NEVER make money by cutting costs. You can ONLY make money by making sales!

     SECOND, stop believing all the mainstream media reports that nothing is selling and that the sky is falling. These news stories, designed to sell advertising space and time, are simply not true! They are exaggerated and over-emphasized on purpose.

Here’s the real-deal truth:

Struggling economy reports attract curiousity. Who’s struggling? Where? How much? Curiousity sells newspapers and news magazines and builds broadcast news audiences. Increased print and broadcast sales figures are used to pump up rate cards to suck more advertising dollars out of naive businesses that are already financially beleagured. 

                                                      

     Contrary to most network TV news slants, for example, many products and services ARE in fact selling, and selling well! You need only look around you at what the most successful companies are doing to make that happen. Promotional programs that look and feel like everybody elses’ don’t make sales.

     Customized marketing tools and messages do make sales! People are buying from businesses that cater to them, that take a personalized approach, that interact, that educate, that prove and demonstrate performance of benefits, that back up features with meaningful warrantees and guarantees, and that lean to the green whenever possible!  

     The bottom line is that savvy companies are shortening up on their long over-priced traditional media budgets, and lengthening out on their customization approaches to low-priced Internet marketing.
