How do I know all this?
First, because I grew up with my father being (for 25 years) a USPS Special Delivery Messenger –the first 7-days a week version of overnight delivery service– and watched Special Delivery Mail dissolve away to open a floodgate of business for FedEx, UPS, Amazon, and a long list of others.
Second, because I’ve had the good fortune to have had many proven and experienced business teachers and trainers in my life share many business development basics, like: No one ever has all the answers. Open Minds Open Doors. Leadership is about listening first and acting second.
And I have been able to apply successfully what I’ve learned to teach others— as a professor, business and healthcare practice coach/consultant, published author, management trainer, and now as a “business how-to” podcast and radio host.
With that as background, I attempted numerous times over the years to communicate with USPS executives in some of the same ways I succeeded at communicating with private business enterprise owners and managers… with ideas and proposals… but they were never responded to except by form letter thank-you-but-no-thank-you notes.

D.I.Y. BUSINESS?
D.I.Y. PARENTING?
. . . Not unless you’re dumber than dirt!
OKAY, so let’s get this straight: You started your own business and/or have a new baby?
YOU run your own business and/or you fumble through being a new parent?
NEITHER is true, but you’re thinking about one or both endeavors?
“Do It Yourself” stuff may work for birthing and parenting if you are fully prepared, but–even then– you will need help from a physician or midwife and ultimately teachers and family members, not to mention online resources.
“D.I.Y.” may also work for house renos if you have exceptional mechanical skills and/or significant demolition and construction experience, but that doesn’t mean you have what it takes to buy or sell a house without expert input at many levels… that’s what America’s two million licensed real estate agents are for.
The same dynamics of this distinction apply in spades to running and growing a business (and parenting)… where do you turn when you’re stuck between a rock and a hard place?
Hopefully, you go to a knowledgeable resource you trust and are comfortable consulting with.
Given entrepreneurial attitudes that orbit around “I can do it myself” thinking, very many ventures fail when the startup creator/innovator is absolutely 100% certain no help is needed. Then exercise due diligence in finding and vetting the person, team, or service that’s affordable (as measured against financial collapse) and that has the expertise you need to prevent or turn your predicament into an asset, your problem into a solution, your stress into positive energy… your fears and doubts into enlightenment.
Keep in mind that when you exercise this approach, you are –in fact– pursuing a D.I.Y. solution. You are finding the help you need for your SELF, on your own, and on your own terms. And that pursuit alone proves you are smarter than the norm, and much less likely to end up with a failed business with success on the horizon.

It really doesn’t matter who said it or when. What matters is that entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial thinkers need to take heed now. Why? Entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial thinkers are often thought to be over-acting “drama queens” because they rarely worry about hiding their emotions. They tend to become excited about anything and everything that leads to forward movement of their “burning desire” idea.
And, yes, these same enthusiasts will also over-react to negative news about anything that impedes the progress of making their idea work.
If you fit this description, or if you work or live with someone who does— lo and behold!– you can actually make a difference in the equation!
It’s called REALITY. A good strong does of reality will take away any pain, any upset, and tendency to engage in analysis paralysis. Being realistic is, after all, the key ingredient of five essential criteria that define effective goal-setting and successful goal-pursuit.
REALITY is a slippery piece of soap for many even thought they may honor its value. Reality has a way of turning quickly to fantasy whenever things don’t seem to be going right.
It is, after all, much easier to get “lost” in fantasyland than it is to “shape up” mentally or physically or emotionally to the point of being able to most effectively deal with what’s right in front of your face.
But, alas, this was why breathing was invented, don’t you think? Every breath– like every heartbeat and pulse throb– has the ability to put us in touch with reality . . . with what’s going on this very split second . . . vs. past (more than a few seconds old, over which we have no control and cannot change even if we want to), and future (more than a few seconds ahead of the air and space and mindset we are in at this exact split second, and which, of course, may never happen anyway).
So, bottom line: no need to fret. Just pay attention to your SELF. When you begin to feel upset, choose to focus your attention on your heartbeat or pulse, pinch yourself, take a deep breath, then get back to dealing with the next incoming immediate split second of your life.
